Tips For Solving Letter Reasoning Questions
Reasoning and Mental Ability are the categories of questions present in every exams including that of banks and other financial institutions today. So knowing some tricks and tips will be always handy to solve the questions quite easily.Reasoning and Mental Ability questions are of various types. There may be verbal and non-verbal reasoning. In verbal reasoning, sentences, words, letters and figures are involved. In non-verbal reasoning, pictures or symbols takes the place. There may also be a mixture of all these things in the question. Reasoning is an artistic and scientific arrangement of certain things, which we have to analyse in the right manner and apply to answer the question. In reasoning questions there is always a clue. So a brilliant candidate can very well answer these questions if he succeeds in finding out the scientific arrangement of things in the questions.
I am posting here some Coding-Decoding questions and tips which are a part of verbal reasoning.
Q In a certain code, COMPUTER is written as RFUVQNPC. Find the correct coding for MEDICINE in
the same code?
(1)MFEDJJOE (2)EOJJDDEJFM (3) EOJDJEFM (4) None of these
First of all one has to look into the similarities in the two given words which are clue. The two given words are COMPUTER and RFUVQNPC. The C and R in the first word is present in the second word; the only thing is that they are interchanged. Now the other letter: OMPUTE in the first word is not looking similar to FUVQNP. But by taking a closer look we can see that ETUPMO i.e the reverse of OMPUTE, can be similar to FUVQNP. The similarity is shown as below:

Each letter in the first word is moved one step ahead to form the corresponding letter in the second word. After E, F and after T it is U, and so on. This way we can arrange the word in question. The word is MEDICINE. The same code to be applied. M and E interchanges their position. E - - - - - M. Now
the rest of the word without M and E are EDICIN. BY applying the same code, the letters are reversed and
we get NICIDE. Now the correct format is:

So the answer is E O J D J E F M ie 3.

Now that you have learned the above example, you should have understood one thing. The comparison and
similarity will be there. How to find out this thing. There is an easier method which will be helpful in some more questions like these. If there are more than two or three questions and you are a beginner, you can follow the following method. You have to write in the space provided for rough work the english alphabets starting from A to Z and below that you have to write it in the reverse order, ie from Z to A, where A comes below Z and Z comes below A and so on.

Wonder how DIAMOND is VQYMKLV. Look at the above alphabet coding. D in DIAMOND is the diagonal neighbour of V in VQYMKLV. All other letters are diagonal neigbours. So you can very easily decode FEMALE as TUMYNU.
