1936: Edward VIII renounces the crown Brtish sovereign Edward VIII voluntarily declared resignation from the crown on this day in 1936. His abdication was a result of a failed attempt to gain acceptance by royal people and church to marry a woman he loved. The woman was a divorcee from the US and was pursuing another divorce. The King had to either throw away his throne or forget his love. The King chose the latter path by renouncing his crown. 1941: Germany declared war against the US The USA declared war against Japan after they attacked Pearl Harbor. In response, Adolf Hitler on December 11, 1941, declared war against the US. US was taking a neutral stand during World War II. But the declaration to attack its ally, the Japanese empire and enter World War II instigated Hitler to fight against the US.
