1936: Edward VIII renounces the crown

Brtish sovereign Edward VIII voluntarily declared resignation from the crown on this day in 1936. His abdication was a result of a failed attempt to gain acceptance by royal people and church to marry a woman he loved. The woman was a divorcee from the US and was pursuing another divorce. The King had to either throw away his throne or forget his love. The King chose the latter path by renouncing his crown.

1941: Germany declared war against the US

The USA declared war against Japan after they attacked Pearl Harbor. In response, Adolf Hitler on December 11, 1941, declared war against the US. US was taking a neutral stand during World War II. But the declaration to attack its ally, the Japanese empire and enter World War II instigated Hitler to fight against the US. In fact, there was an agreement by Nazi Germany with Japan that they will aid Japan if it is attacked by another country and not otherwise. Though the US declaration of war against Japan is ignited with the Pearl Harbor incident, Hitler decided to aid Japan and attack the US.

1946: UNICEF born

UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) was established as the United Nations Children's Emergency Fund on this date. They now work in about 190 nations with the aim to save the lives of children, defending their rights and their general welfare. New York, USA is the headquarters of UNICEF.

1978: Lufthansa heist

Lufthansa Airlines Cargo building was robbed by 6 men on this day. It is one of the greatest robberies in US history. Though 5 million in cash was robbed, it will be rounded up to 21 million in today's dollar rate. They had also robbed 1 million in jewelry.
