The beautiful state of Nagaland came into being on December 1, 1963, as the 16th State of India. Its local festival named Hornbill festival is starting on December 1. This amazing and stupendous festival features the customs and traditions of Nagaland. So what actually is the connection between a Hornbill and a Hornbill Festival?! Hornbill is described in vivid colors in almost every tribe story of Nagaland. Thus the State celebrated its own official festival firstly in the year 2000 as the Hornbill Festival and this year it will go on till December 10.

The festival highlights include the traditional Naga Morungs exhibition and the sale of arts and crafts, food stalls, herbal medicine stalls, flower shows and sales, cultural medley - songs and dances. Other important events include fashion shows where the contest for the Miss Nagaland beauty is held, archery contest and display of traditional Nagas, Naga wrestling, other indigenous games, and musical concerts in a lively environment.
The Hornbill Festival is an eye-satisfier exhibition where one can witness dances in colorful attire, mouth-watering food fairs, several parades, games for interaction, crafts, games, sports events, and other religious ceremonies. The idea behind the festival is to reiterate the theme of a United and Unique State through its vast and vivid culture and tradition of tribals. People meet together from different cultures and tribes thus leading to cultural assimilation during the festival.
One can never lose sight of the colorful dances displayed by Nagas. Modse, Agurshikukula, Butterfly Dance, Aaluyattu, Sadal Kekai, Changai Dance, Kuki Dance, Leshalaptu, Khamba Lim, Mayur Dance, Monyoasho, Rengma, Seecha and Kukui Kucho, Shankai and Moyashai, etc, are some of the traditional dance forms of the Nagas. The important ones among those are War Dance and Zeliang Dance.
War dance mocks the war preparation or battle by cleverly involving battle movements and using martial styles using the full potential of the body as used by a warrior. Zeliang tribe in Nagaland performs the Zeliang dance. The synchronized movements which are unique in style when performed with vivid clothes and attires backed by interesting chants is a one-big display event that you shouldn't miss.
Apart from that, this year also the Government has prepared so much to cherish every tourist. A variety of sports, crafts, dance, fashion events, and competitions will be held. Food fair, songs concerts, and other entertainments will make the scene lively always. Traditional artworks, handmade things, sculptures, etc will be exhibited. Unique herbal medicine stalls are very worthy to experience. Hornbill Music Festival is the union of mixed cultures from the native and international fields.
Modern Naga artists exhibit their paintings, wood sculptures, etc as part of Traditional arts. Folk songs are sung by Naga troupes. Indigenous games are also on the display. Music concert which satisfies all tastes is held throughout the night thus keeping the momentum and spirits live during the entire festival. The festival is mostly celebrated to promote the cultural heritage of Nagaland, and to encourage inter-tribal interaction. This festival is rightly called 'Festival of Festivals'.
