1814: Andrew Jackson ignites Battle of Orleans

Every landmark event has a beginning in history. The Battle of Orleans kickstarted when General Andrew Jackson who was the commander of the US Army of the Southwest, made a sudden move to defend New Orleans, Louisiana against the invading British army. It was in the year 1814.

1825: Alexander 1 of Russia died on this day in 1825. 

1862: State of the Union address by Abraham Lincoln

On this day in the year 1862, Abraham Lincoln delivered the State of the Union address which exhibited a moderate position on the emancipation of slaves. Followed by his Emancipation Proclamation, he now chose to give a gradual and compensated freedom to slaves which were welcomed by many moderates and conservatives.

1913: Assembly Line by Ford


On December 1, 1913, a moving assembly line was installed by Henry Ford which helped his produce automobile on a massive scale. This step reduced the car manufacturing time drastically and Ford increased car production. The process also helped to make cars inexpensively. Although Henry Ford, the founder of Ford automobiles did not invent the automobile, his innovative ideas and its application led to drastic developments in the automobile industry.

1925: Pact of Locarno 

The Pact of Locarno is the landmark treaty on peace in Western Europe. In 1925, five nations viz. Germany, France, Belgium, Great Britain, and Italy signed this pact to prevail in peace.

1955: Rosa Parks incident

In 1955, Rosa Park refused to relinquish her bus seat to a white man which sparked controversy in America. She was arrested for violating segregation laws in Montgomery, Alabama State in the US. Rosa Parks is known as "the mother of the civil rights movement".  She was working as a volunteer in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in Montgomery. During that time under the civil law of Montgomery, black people were forced to sit at the back seat of public transport buses. As an activist working for the colored people, Rosa sat on a bus seat meant for white people. While a white man came for the seat she refused to move away even after the driver himself asked her to. This led to her arrest and thus kick-started the famous bus boycott under the leadership of Rev.Martin Luther King, Jr. which continued for more than a year.

Later when US Supreme Court struck down the draconian law on the basis of violation of equality guaranteed by the Constitution, it was the victory of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., American People, and human rights.

1959: Antarctica Treaty

In 1959, during the time of the Cold War, the United States among and other eleven nations signed the Antarctica Treaty. During those times some parts of Antarctica were claimed by different nations which resulted in many battles. US took a lead role and asked the fighting nations to surrender the disputed parts to the UN to which most nations not agreed. Later the US and the Soviet Union carved out a treaty that permits scientific research in those disputed parts of Antarctica and ending all sorts of military activities there. This treaty was aimed to evacuate the military from the Antarctic continent so as to preserve it for scientific research. To this Pact, all nations agreed as it will not harm their claim over the disputed land. Thus Antarctica was made a military-free continent.

1988: World AIDS Day

On December 1, 1988, World's first AIDS day was officially celebrated.

Mexican President 

In Mexico, Vicente Fox became President thereby putting an end to 71-year-old domination of the Institutional Revolutionary Party.
