1818: Illinois joined the USA
Illinois was admitted to the United States as the 21st state. There was a population of less than 35000 when it was granted statehood. Agriculture was the main occupation of the Illinois people.
1912: End of Balkan War
First Balkan war, a par of World War 1 ended as a result of the signing of an armistice by Bulgaria, Serbia, and Montenegro with Turkey. Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Montenegro were called the Balkan league. They had expelled Turkey from possessing lands of the Ottoman Empire.
1967: First human heart transplant
Christian Barnard performed the first-ever human transplant surgery in South Africa. The operation was conducted in Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. 53-year-old Louis Washkansky was the receiver of heart. Denise Darvall, a woman aged 25, was the donor. After 18 days of the successful surgery, Washkansky died of pneumonia.
1984: Bhopal Gas Tragedy: Union Carbide Factory in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India hit the headlines when the gas from the factory leaked killing about 20,000 people. It is reported that almost half-million survivors had serious medical conditions due to the accident. It is regarded as one of the worst industrial hazards in world history. There was a leakage of Methyl Iso Cyanite and nitrogen and the explosion took place just some minutes after midnight of December 2. The plant authorities were alleged to be negligent in keeping outdated machinery and security provisions.
