1884: Washington Pyramid

To commemorate its first President George Washington USA completed a much-dragged construction of an impressive monument on December 6. It has a Greek temple-like design. Its designer was architect Robert Mills. The construction was halted in the midway due to lack of funds. However, US President Ulysses S. Grant authorized its construction in 1876. 555 feet is its height. Washington city passed a law at that time limiting the height of constructions so that the monument remains the tallest building.

1865: 13th Amendment of US constitution

A colorful victory. The US ended the ill-practice of slavery by ratifying the 13th Amendment to its Constitution. Prior to that Abraham Lincoln had issued Emancipation Proclamation declaring all slaves who are in rebellion to be free. Republican party under the leadership of Lincoln passed the amendment and Georgia became the last state to ratify the same.

1917: Halifax Explosion

Norwegian vessel Imo and French freighter Mont-Blanc collided together to occur the most devastating explosion in the harbor of Halifax. This happened during World War 1. This explosion is said to have killed about 2000 people and injured above 9000 people.

1917: Finland independence

Finland declared independence from the clutches of Russia on this day. 

1922: Ireland freedom

Ireland finally got its freedom from the British empire when the Irish Free State was declared on this day. It was in the late 19th century did the movement for home rule gained strength in Ireland. Thereafter a guerilla campaign was launched against the British before the State was declared independent.

1992: Babri Masjid destruction

One of the most infamous incidents in the history of India-the destruction of Babri Masjid by a group of extremists. Babri Masjid situated in Ayodhya. There was an allegation that the Masjid situated in a place where a Hindu temple in the name of God Rama situated. This led to a widespread religious riot between the Hindu and Muslim communities.
