1961: Tanzanian Independence
Tanzania was created by unifying Tanganyika with the island of Zanzibar in 1964. Tanganyika became independent on this date in 1961. Julius Nyerere was the first prime minister. He also became the first President of Tanzania in 1964.
1980: End of Smallpox
World Health Organisation declared that Small Pox is eradicated from the world. This disease is also known by the name 'variola major'. Almost 30 percent of the victims of the disease killed are children. The experiments of Edward Jenner, English physician did play a vital role in finding out a cure in the form of a vaccine to control this disease.
1990: Poland President
Lech Walesa who founded the Solidarity trade union became the first directly elected Presiden of Poland.
1998: Ending Anti-Semitism
Anti-Semitism is racist discrimination against Semites. Jews were the class of people who were discriminated by way of this campaign. German agitator Wilhelm Marr had coined the word 'Anti-Semitism'. During the middle ages in Europe, Jews were denied many rights which includes taking jobs and professions of many kinds. Jews had to undergo severe tortures in Nazi Germany during the period of Adolf Hitler. They were treated like sub-human creatures. It was Pope John XXIII and the Second Vatican Council, who exonerated Jews for murdering Jesus Christ. On December 9, 1998, United Nations General Assembly declared to end Anti-Semitism.
