1936: Edward VIII renounces the crown Brtish sovereign Edward VIII voluntarily declared resignation from the crown on this day in 1936. His abdication was a result of a failed attempt to gain acceptance by royal people and church to marry a woman he loved. The woman was a divorcee from the US and was pursuing another divorce. The King had to either throw away his throne or forget his love. The King chose the latter path by renouncing his crown. 1941: Germany declared war against the US The USA declared war against Japan after they attacked Pearl Harbor. 1768: Encyclopaedia Britannica First publication of Encyclopaedia Britannica was on this day in 1768. It was advertised for sale in Edinburgh. 1898: End of Spanish-American War Treaty of Paris was signed by Spain and the US to end the Spanish American War. The treaty was signed in Paris. William McKinley was the US President. The war between the US and Spain ended the colonial era of Spain over the US.  1901: First Nobel Prizes  Nobel Prizes were distributed for the first time. 1961: Tanzanian Independence Tanzania was created by unifying Tanganyika with the island of Zanzibar in 1964. Tanganyika became independent on this date in 1961. Following are the important events in World History on December 8 1987: Nuclear Weapons Reduction Treaty A nuclear weapons reduction treaty was signed between US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet General Secretary Mikhael Gorbachev. This treaty was named the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty(INF Treaty). The agreement was meant to eliminate the stock of intermediate land-based missiles carrying nuclear warheads of both nations. Apart from the ground missiles, the agreement looked to eliminate Intermediate-Range ballistic missiles and short-range ballistic missiles. 1787: Delaware ratified US Constitution Delaware ratified the US constitution. It was the first State to do so. Thus it became the first state to join in the modern United States. There were 30 members in the Delaware Constitutional Convention which ratified the Constitution. 1941: Pearl Harbor attacked Japanese bomber planes attacked Pearl Harbor, a US Naval base situated on the Oahu island, Hawaii. This surprise attack caused the US entry into World War II. About 2403 Americans were killed in the attack. December 7 was later designated as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day in August 1994.  1972: Appolo's last crew Eugene Andrew Cernan steered the last crew ship to the Moon. 1884: Washington Pyramid To commemorate its first President George Washington USA completed a much-dragged construction of an impressive monument on December 6. It has a Greek temple-like design. Its designer was architect Robert Mills. The construction was halted in the midway due to lack of funds. However, US President Ulysses S. It was the world's first Sunday newspaper. 1829: Sati Abolition It was the practice in India to burn alive the Hindu widows in husband's funeral fire. In British India, this practice was banned through legislation by Governor-General Lord William Bentick. In fact, in the 16th century, Humayun and later Akbar passed orders making Sati illegal. Later women practiced this voluntarily. But this practice was banned in Goa by the Portuguese much earlier.
